About Cultivated Designs

Greetings! Thank you for visiting my business profile. My name is Curtis Pattee, and I'm the sole owner and operator of Cultivated Designs LLC. This space was created to serve as an extension of my portfolio (which is now called my 'legacy portfolio') in order to showcase my most recent work, and highlight my advancements in parametric design. I earned my Masters degree in Architecture from Montana State University in 2013, after that I spent some time working in a few design and non-design positions before embarking on my solo business venture.

Founded in 2016, Cultivated Designs is a multi-discipline design studio that specializes in 3D modeling and computational design (also known as parametric design). With projects ranging from furniture to architectural graphics, I've worked to build a diverse portfolio that displays my versatility as an artist, as well as my skills as a parametric script developer with Rhino3D+Grasshopper. The software was introduced to me back in 2008, and I was instantly captured by its stream-like interface, and its immense power as a design tool. Since then, I've used it to aid in nearly every job and task that involved 2D or 3D geometry (plus a few that didn't). I quickly learned that, like me, the platform is versatile and capable of doing incredible things--it just needs a good challenge.

At the end of the day, I simply like to solve problems, and help people come up with creative solutions for their projects. And while I've narrowed my professional focus onto parametric design, my interests and skills cast a wide net. Whether it's a design problem, or a situation that seems completely unrelated to the architecture & design field, I love to be challenged; big, small, complex, or simple, I'm ready to take on just about anything.

With over two decades of CAD experience under my belt, I'm keen to take on any geometric problem. This could be anything: highly-accurate renderings of products, 3D & 2D files for manufacturing, animations, or custom models for games or large projects.

Recent Projects

Below is a selection of projects which showcase some of the larger applications of parametric design. These long-term contracts ranged between a few months in length, to multiple years and ongoing. All of the projects involved building customized scripts that process various types of input data, and output whatever information is needed: 3D models & scenes, drawings, cut lists, renderings, web-ready geometry, and many other types of data. Each situation required the development of a comprehensive parametric tool or set of tools, tailored to the client's needs.

Full Parametric Design Services for Modular Dwellings

The unique shape of these modular structures created the perfect opportunity to develop a computational design solution which generates the entire building from a defined set of parameters. This comprehensive script was created from the ground-up, and carries out a multitude of functions: 3D and CAM file generation, waste-reduction optimizations, cut list and part drawing creation, and much more.

SPM Design

Parametric Design Consulting
for Sculptural Installations

With seven maps total--one for each continent, and several thousand individually-cut oak tiles for each map, these large sculptural installations required a tremendous amount of labor and coordination. I joined SPMDesign to assist with the project, specifically to help the shop and design engineering teams make ther deadlines. My task was to develop grasshopper scripts to aid in production, which included generation of CNC CAD files, jig creation documents, spreadsheets, and other items crucial to the fabrication process.

Geovin Furniture

Web Application for Customizable Furniture

The custom furniture industry is great place to showcase parametric design applications. I worked with Geovin to develop a series of 3D scripts for their catalog of nightstands, dressers, cabinets, and beds--fully customizable. The result is a stunning, interactive app integrated with the company's new website, which allows customers to change the size, features, and finishes and see the 3D model update in real time.

I consider this my flagship parametric design project. The task was to turn a family-owned furniture company's entire line of products into interactive digital models. They offered over 100 different product designs, each fully customizable in size, wood type, finish, hardware, and more.
